What a colour actually does to your face

Plain
Technical
Take one photo of your face
Face a window if you can, no direct sun, nothing bright directly behind you. Your photo never leaves this device.
Deep skin? A firmer reading from three photos {{ deepSkinTipsChevron }}
Deep skin reflects less light back to the camera, so one photo alone can leave the reading tentative. Three closes most of that gap:
1. Daylight — near a window, no direct sun
2. Indoor / tungsten — your normal room lighting
3. Holding a plain white sheet of paper in frame, in either light — this tells us exactly what the light did, so we can correct for it

Understanding Your Skin Tone

1 · The three parts of your coloring

Undertone — the constant hue beneath your skin: warm (golden/peach), cool (pink/blue), or neutral (a balance). It doesn't change with a tan.

Depth — how light or dark your overall coloring is (skin, hair and eyes together). Color scientists call this value.

Clarity & contrast — whether your coloring looks bright and clear or soft and blended, and how different your features are from one another. Brightness is called chroma.

These are the three axes of the Munsell color system — hue, value, chroma — the standard for describing any color precisely [1].
Hue color family The color foundation

2 · How to identify yours

Check in natural daylight, no makeup:

Veins — greenish wrist veins lean warm; blue/purple lean cool; a mix is neutral.
Metals — gold flatters warm, silver flatters cool, both suit neutral.
White vs. cream — hold each near your face; the one that makes skin look fresher hints at undertone (cream → warm, white → cool).
Sun — skin that tans easily leans warm/neutral; skin that burns first often leans cool.

These are clues, not proof — the more that agree, the more confident you can be [3].
Hue undertone

3 · Where this comes from

Albert H. Munsell, A Color Notation (1905) — defined hue, value and chroma, the measurable basis for undertone, depth and clarity [1].

Johannes Itten, The Art of Color (1961) — the Bauhaus teacher who tied personal coloring to warm/cool color families; the seed of seasonal analysis [2].

Carole Jackson, Color Me Beautiful (1980) — popularized the four-season system (Spring / Summer / Autumn / Winter) used here [3].

Later analysts expanded this to 12 sub-seasons by adding depth and clarity [4] — the model this tool uses. It is a styling framework, not exact science: treat results as a strong starting point, then trust the mirror.
Chroma: clear and vivid against muted and soft

4 · Why a color works — or doesn't

Undertone match — a color sharing your undertone reflects onto your skin and evens it out; the opposite undertone can make skin look sallow, grey or blotchy.

Depth match — colors near your own depth feel balanced; far too dark overpowers light coloring, far too light washes out deep coloring.

Clarity match — bright, clear coloring carries vivid colors that would overwhelm soft coloring; muted coloring looks harmonious in softened shades and "dusty" in neon.

Contrast match — high-contrast features (dark hair, fair skin) suit high-contrast outfits; low-contrast features look best in tonal, blended combinations [5].

How we read the faces below: each reference face is sorted by its measured skin depth (light → deep), sampled directly from the photo. Depth is what an image can show reliably; your undertone can't be read from a picture, so you confirm that yourself — depth + undertone together give your season.

Find Your Season — Take the Quiz
i
What's a "color season" and why does it matter? Learn more
Your natural coloring — skin, hair, and eyes — has its own warmth, depth, and intensity. Clothing and makeup colors that echo those same qualities make your features look brighter and more alive; colors that clash with them can make you look tired, sallow, or washed out even if the color is "pretty" on its own.

"Color seasons" (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, each with subtypes) are a shorthand for groups of colors that share the same warmth/coolness, depth, and clarity as different coloring types — so once you know your season, you have a ready-made palette that's likely to flatter you.
1. Your undertone
i
What is undertone? It's the subtle color beneath your skin's surface — warm (golden/yellow), cool (pink/blue), or neutral (a mix). It doesn't change with a tan and is different from how light or dark your skin is.

How to check it yourself: Look at the veins on your wrist in natural light — greenish veins usually mean warm, blue/purple veins mean cool, and a mix means neutral. Or notice whether gold or silver jewelry looks more flattering against your skin.

Why it matters: Colors that match your undertone tend to make your skin look brighter and healthier, while mismatched colors can wash you out — it's the single biggest factor in "your season."
Skin tone and undertone are different — pick whichever feels true:
Warm — I look best in gold jewelry
Cool — I look best in silver jewelry
Neutral — both look fine
2. Overall depth
i
What is "depth"? How light or dark your overall coloring is — skin, hair, and eyes combined — regardless of undertone. A person can be deep AND cool (Deep Winter), or deep AND warm (Deep Autumn); depth and undertone are independent.

Why it matters: Deep coloring can carry rich, saturated colors and dark neutrals without looking washed out; very light coloring is often overwhelmed by the same colors and looks better in soft, muted ones.
Light — fair skin, light hair & eyes
Medium
Deep — dark hair, deep skin or eyes
3. Contrast & clarity
i
Contrast is how different your hair, skin, and eye colors are from each other — e.g. dark hair with pale skin is high contrast; similar-toned hair, skin, and eyes is low contrast.

Clarity is whether your coloring reads as bright and vivid (clear) or soft and blended (muted). Together they decide whether you suit bold saturated colors, soft muted ones, or warm earthy ones.
